Speaking Truth with Love

In the late 1980s the “political correctness” movement began on college campuses to combat prejudice and injustice toward certain groups. Today, this way of avoiding possibly offensive language has spread to everyday speech and situations. Unfortunately our speech is now so “safe” people avoid speaking the truth or taking a stand on issues for fear of offending someone. This makes life seem more peaceful—but it’s false peace.

Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, “Does this offend you?” (John 6:61).

Jesus did not fear speaking the truth. Instead, He spoke it openly with confidence. He wasn’t concerned about what people wanted to hear. He said what they needed to hear. While some found this offensive many others received it because they recognized He spoke out of love for them. He loved them enough to die for them, and He loved them enough to speak the truth to them. May we, His disciples, imitate Him by courageously speaking the truth with love.

Thought for Today: If you honestly love others, you must be honest with them even if they don’t like what you say.
