In Exodus chapter 3, Moses finds himself standing before a burning bush with God telling him that He is calling him to go back to Egypt to set the Hebrews free. Our image of Moses is often Charlton Heston as Moses parting the Red Sea, but before he got to that point he had to step out of his safe zone into a faith zone where he was totally depending on God.
When Moses tried to help the Hebrews on his own , he made a mess of the situation and killed an Egyptian man and the other Hebrews then wanted nothing to do with him..Exodus 2:11-14
11 One day, after Moses had grown up, he went out to where his own people were and watched them at their hard labor. He saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his own people. 12 Glancing this way and that and seeing no one, he killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand. 13 The next day he went out and saw two Hebrews fighting. He asked the one in the wrong, "Why are you hitting your fellow Hebrew?"
14 The man said, "Who made you ruler and judge over us? Are you thinking of killing me as you killed the Egyptian?" Then Moses was afraid and thought, "What I did must have become known."
14 The man said, "Who made you ruler and judge over us? Are you thinking of killing me as you killed the Egyptian?" Then Moses was afraid and thought, "What I did must have become known."
Moses fled to the desert where he had a good comfortable life with a wife, son, and lots of sheep!
He spent 40 years there trying to get away from his past!
Before he could do what God was calling him to do he had to...
- He had to overcome the experiences of his past
- He had to overcome the comforts of his present
- He overcame the Insecurity of his future
Moses gives God a whole list of excuses and and finally ask God just to get someone else!!
Exodus 4:13 But Moses said, "O Lord, please send someone else to do it."
Finally Moses had to humble himself and allow totally depend on God and then he had that break through that got him to the place where he was talking face to face with God!
Here are some things we can learn from Moses about getting into the faith zone with God..
- It's not easy to leave our safe zones!
- Real growth begins when we leave the safe zone!
- The safe zones rob us of our greatest moments!
Moses stepped out into a faith zone and God used him in a mighty way!

On May 30, Austin Wood a pitcher for the University of Texas, accomplished something that will be remembered for a long time. With his team's chances for making it to the College World series on the line, he pitched 13 innings of his team's 25 inning game against Boston College. In the longest college game ever, his team would win 3-2 as a direct result of his willingness to go the extra mile ..
His coach Augie Garrido said of his performance..
“When a player breaks through to that level, it changes his life. He’s now shown the courage that we want in all of our players. He showed the respect for the game, he showed confidence in himself and he did it. And now he knows something not many people know — you really can be anything you choose to be. You just have to have the confidence to take what belongs to you. That game belonged to him.”
Austin Wood will leave a legacy for future Texas players to look to , just as Moses left a legacy for us a result
So when you think of Moses, don't just think of the man of faith parting the Red Sea, think also of the man , who like us , felt like he couldn't do what God called him to do. And he couldn't , unless he stepped into the faith zone and put all his trust in God!
